UPDATE: The University of Maine’s football team just clinched a thrilling 28-21 victory over Stony Brook University, marking their fifth consecutive win this season. The decisive action unfolded on a blustery Saturday afternoon at Morse Field in Alfond Stadium in Orono.
This victory is significant for the Black Bears, as it marks their first five-game winning streak since the 2018 season, a year when they reached the Football Championship Subdivision playoff semifinals for the first time in program history. With this win, UMaine improves to 5-4 overall and 4-1 in the Coastal Athletic Association, while Stony Brook falls to 4-5 and 2-3.
The game changed momentum early in the third quarter when UMaine scored two touchdowns just 2:23 apart, establishing a commanding 21-point lead. Graduate quarterback Carter Peevy opened the scoring in the second half with a 1-yard rushing touchdown, his sixth of the season, following a pivotal 44-yard pass to Aaron Arteaga.
Stony Brook attempted to rally back, with quarterback Quinn Boyd connecting on a 15-yard touchdown pass to Dez Williams just before halftime, narrowing the score to 14-7. However, UMaine’s defense was relentless, recovering a fumble on the Seawolves’ next possession, setting the stage for another touchdown pass from Peevy to freshman running back Daniel Batch, who scored his first career touchdown.
“We played tough and stuck together as a team,” said Peevy after the game, highlighting the Black Bears’ unity and determination.
Despite some late-game drama with Stony Brook scoring another touchdown and recovering an onside kick attempt, UMaine sealed the win. The Black Bears’ defense shined, limiting Stony Brook’s leading rusher, Roland Dempster, to just 22 yards on 14 carries, well below his season average.
Peevy finished the game completing 14 of 25 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 51 yards. The Black Bears’ offense was further bolstered by Sincere Baines, who recorded 86 yards on 12 carries.
As for Stony Brook, Boyd completed 33 of 59 passes for 299 yards and one touchdown, with standout performances from Williams and R.J. Lamarre, who had 129 yards and 71 yards receiving, respectively.
Looking ahead, UMaine will travel to play Hampton next Saturday at 1 p.m., while Stony Brook will host North Carolina A&T at noon. Fans are eager to see if the Black Bears can extend their winning streak further. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story!
