Spartans Struggle at Home With 1-3 Split Despite Villanueva’s Grand Slam
The Southwestern Community College Spartans dropped three of four games at home last week, falling behind in conference standings as they prepare for postseason play starting May 7. The Spartans hosted Indian Hills and Iowa Western, pushing hard but ultimately falling short despite moments of offensive firepower.
Wilson Villanueva electrified the crowd with a grand slam in the opening inning of game two against Indian Hills, giving the Spartans an early 4-run lead. But Indian Hills surged back, scoring nine unanswered runs to secure a 14-8 victory. Villanueva’s blast stood out as a rare highlight in an otherwise tough loss.
On Tuesday, Southwestern split a doubleheader with Indian Hills, winning the opener 7-4. The Spartans delivered timely hits across multiple innings, taking an early 7-3 lead before closing the game in six innings. Anibal Montanez and Jackson McDanel each scored twice while contributors like Dustin Bennett, Wyatt Throckmorton, and Brayden Mitchell also helped push runs across the plate. Pitchers Ryan Boklmann and Eliot Bergollo combined to contain Indian Hills’ offense, with Boklmann striking out five.
However, the Spartans couldn’t hold the momentum in game two. After Villanueva’s grand slam jumpstarted their offense, they failed to sustain it as Indian Hills pummeled their bullpen, scoring nine runs across the second and third innings. The bullpen rotation leaned heavily on Alex Parish, who pitched three innings and struck out four, while Kenton Jensen added a crucial fifth strikeout.
Iowa Western Sweeps Spartans in Tight and High-Scoring Games
On Saturday, the Spartans faced the top-ranked Iowa Western Reivers (38-9, 11-1) and lost both games 5-4 and 14-7 despite pushing the Reivers to the limit. Southwestern briefly led 4-1 in game one before Iowa Western tied the game 4-4 where it stayed into the ninth inning. Iowa Western scored the walk-off winning run in the top of the ninth to seal the Spartans’ fate.
The Spartans showed grit, with Brayden Mitchell hitting a crucial home run to keep hopes alive. Defensive miscues and a late-game rally from Iowa Western proved to be the Spartans’ undoing.
Postseason Outlook: Spartans Head Back to Indian Hills Today
Southwestern heads back to Indian Hills today for a doubleheader and hosts Iowa Western tomorrow, facing critical matchups before regional championships begin May 7, 8, and 9. The Spartans, sitting at 17-33 overall and 1-9 in conference, need to tighten their bullpen and maintain early offensive sparks to alter the season trajectory.
Coach and players are focused on momentum as the postseason approaches, but challenges remain clear after recent home struggles. Fans can follow all live updates and game coverage at Southwestern’s home field in the days ahead.
