Rhode Island Declares State of Emergency, Travel Ban Ahead of Blizzard

UPDATE: Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee has just declared a state of emergency as a powerful blizzard looms over southeastern New England, set to begin on Sunday, February 22, 2025. The state’s travel conditions are anticipated to become “dangerous to impossible,” prompting immediate action to protect residents and first responders.

Officials report that a travel ban for commercial vehicle traffic will take effect at 5 p.m., followed by a ban on all vehicle traffic starting at 7 p.m. The state of emergency will remain in place until further notice. “Once the snow starts, our plows need to be able to operate safely,” McKee emphasized, urging the public to respect road clearance efforts. “Do not drive once the travel ban goes into effect.”

The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning starting at 4 p.m. on February 22, forecasting a staggering 18 to 30 inches of heavy, wet snow across most of the state. Snowfall rates may reach an alarming 4 inches per hour at times, leading to whiteout conditions that could severely impact visibility and road safety.

In response to the severe weather, the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) will suspend all services, including RIde paratransit, beginning at 9 p.m. on February 22, and continuing through Monday, February 23. Service will resume as soon as conditions permit, according to their official news release.

Travel disruptions are already being felt at T.F. Green International Airport, where airlines have canceled the majority of arrivals scheduled after 6:30 p.m. on February 22, alongside numerous departures and arrivals for February 23. Officials are advising travelers to check with airlines for the latest updates.

As the storm approaches, residents are urged to stay indoors and prepare for potential power outages and hazardous conditions. This is an evolving situation, and updates will continue to be provided as new information becomes available.
