Fairbanks Woman Indicted for Murder After Deadly Shooting Incident

URGENT UPDATE: A Fairbanks woman, 27-year-old Brooklyn Whitman, has been indicted on multiple murder charges following a deadly shooting that occurred in the early hours of November 22, 2023. A grand jury has charged her with one count of first-degree murder, one count of second-degree murder, and one count of third-degree assault, alongside four counts of reckless endangerment.

The indictment stems from a shocking incident at the residence of Ashlee Spann, where multiple 911 calls reported a disturbance and a gunshot. Witnesses reported that Spann, who was hosting a friend, received numerous threatening calls from Whitman, who is identified as her ex-partner. Tensions escalated when Whitman arrived at Spann’s home, banging on the door and demanding to be let in.

According to the Alaska State Troopers, Spann instructed Whitman to leave, after which a loud popping noise was heard, followed by Spann collapsing and stating she had been shot. This escalating confrontation underscores the tragic consequences of domestic disputes, leaving the community shaken and mourning.

Whitman has acknowledged firing a shot in the direction of Spann’s residence, claiming she “lost” her “cool.” She is currently being held with a $2 million performance bond and a $1 million appearance bond set by the Department of Corrections.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Rabinowitz Courthouse, where further proceedings will determine her fate in this high-profile case.

This incident highlights urgent issues surrounding domestic violence and the need for intervention before disputes escalate to deadly outcomes. The Fairbanks community is left grappling with the aftermath of this tragedy, and authorities are actively investigating further implications of the case.
