Lakeview girls basketball is gearing up for an exciting season as they strive to build on their first winning record in a decade. Under the leadership of new head coach Aaron Whalen, the Wildcats are prepared to face the challenges that come with a fresh start. With a final record of 13-11 and a fourth-place finish in the Central State Activities Association (CSAA) White conference last year, the team is aiming to elevate their performance this season.
The Wildcats have demonstrated resilience and adaptability in recent years, having transitioned through two coaching changes since the start of the 2021-2022 season. Whalen, who has previously coached successful tournament-level teams in Grand Rapids, is taking on his first K-12 coaching role. His enthusiasm for the opportunity stems from a personal connection, as he wanted to be present for his daughter, who opted not to play her senior year.
“Our numbers are small, but they work really hard,” Whalen noted, emphasizing the team’s commitment and eagerness to improve. The Wildcats are currently led by just one senior, Katelyn Buchner, who shares Whalen’s optimism. “I think once we start fully understanding each other on the court, we’re going to get to a point where we’re going to be good defenders and we’re going to be very good on offense, too,” Buchner stated.
Whalen has made a concerted effort to create a supportive team culture. “It’s about their experience, not mine,” he said, highlighting his focus on the players’ development. Buchner echoed this sentiment, noting that Whalen has been effective in pinpointing areas for improvement, particularly during shooting drills.
With only two returning starters from last season, the Wildcats are familiar with the challenges that lie ahead. Buchner and junior Madison Bristol bring valuable experience to the court, which they anticipate will benefit the team as they face a competitive schedule. Buchner emphasized the importance of their ball handling skills, which played a significant role in their success last year.
As the Wildcats prepare for their upcoming games, the team is optimistic about their potential to grow. “I think they can expect a lot of changes from last season, but still a lot of exciting new things,” Buchner said. The players are eager to showcase their improvements on both offense and defense as the season progresses.
Whalen is enthusiastic about the team’s dynamics and the eagerness to win. “They want to play hard,” he affirmed. He also appreciates the leadership qualities Buchner brings as the only senior on the team. “Katelyn is a natural leader and the girls respect her,” Whalen noted, indicating a positive team atmosphere.
Looking ahead, the Wildcats have already started their season with two games under their belt. The coaching staff and players alike are optimistic about the season’s trajectory. “I’m looking forward to seeing everybody grow,” Whalen commented, recognizing the importance of competition and development.
With the season well underway, Lakeview girls basketball aims to carry forward the momentum from last year’s success. The team is prepared to embrace the challenges ahead while fostering a supportive environment that encourages growth and teamwork. As they step onto the court this season, the Wildcats are ready to demonstrate their commitment and drive for success.
