Late Stephen J. Cannell’s Pasadena Estate Hits Market for $22 Million

The estate of the late television writer Stephen J. Cannell has been listed for sale at $22 million. Located in Pasadena, California, this luxurious property, known as the Bauer Estate and Gardens, spans 5 acres and features a stunning 1928 Monterey Colonial-style mansion.

Renowned for its architectural significance, the estate was highlighted in the 2023 Pasadena Showcase House of Design, showcasing its updated interiors while maintaining early 20th-century grandeur. If the property sells at the asking price, it could set a new record for the city, surpassing the previous record of $20.5 million for a similar mansion sold off-market in July.

Historic Significance and Renovations

The Bauer Estate was originally designed by architect Reginald D. Johnson for Harry and Alice Bauer, with construction completed in 1928. Cannell and his wife, Marcia Cannell, purchased the property in 1988, making them only the second owners. In 1990, they expanded the residence to its current size of 15,553 square feet, which includes five bedrooms and thirteen bathrooms.

Following its appearance in the Showcase House, the estate underwent significant renovations. Designers worked to enhance the property while preserving its historical elements, ensuring that the design reflects the original vision by Johnson. The estate has been recognized as a contributor to Pasadena’s Historic Designed Gardens study, further solidifying its cultural significance.

Features and Amenities

Visitors to the estate can enjoy a beautifully landscaped garden with expansive lawns, mature oak trees, rose gardens, and various water features. The main terrace overlooks a Venetian-style pool and spa, which was added in the 1980s, along with a pool house equipped with changing areas. The property also includes a tennis court and pavilion, enhancing its recreational offerings.

The main house features a grand entry hall, characterized by a sweeping staircase and a hand-painted mural. The kitchen is outfitted with top-of-the-line appliances and custom cabinetry, opening into a family room that boasts a brick fireplace and extensive bookcases. Other notable spaces include a formal dining room, a library, a bar, and a unique “Gentleman’s Study” inspired by Cannell’s extensive career in television.

Cannell, who passed away in October 2010, was known for creating numerous crime dramas, including popular series such as The Rockford Files and 21 Jump Street. His legacy continues through his works and now through the sale of this remarkable estate.

The property is listed by Ted Clark and Heather Lillard of Compass. This is the second property associated with Cannell to be listed this year; his Laguna Beach home was sold earlier in 2024 for $20 million. As the market for luxury real estate continues to evolve, the Bauer Estate stands out not only for its price but also for its rich history and stunning design.
