Hillsborough County Recognizes Sun City Center Emergency Squad’s Outstanding Service

The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners held a commendation ceremony on December 17, 2023, honoring the Sun City Center Emergency Squad for their dedicated service to the community. During the event, Chief Mike Bardell accepted the commendation on behalf of the all-volunteer squad, which has been responding to emergencies since 1964.

The Sun City Center Emergency Squad plays a vital role in community safety, responding to nearly 4,000 ambulance requests annually. Their commitment extends beyond immediate emergency care, as they offer essential services such as free CPR training and disaster planning. By focusing on prevention as well as intervention, the squad emphasizes their dedication to community well-being.

Their efforts have not gone unnoticed; the squad recently received the EMS World/NAEMT 2025 Volunteer EMS Service of the Year Award. With an average age of 70, the squad’s 370 volunteers demonstrate that age is no barrier to service and heroism. Chief Bardell captured the essence of their mission, stating, “The truth is, the true heroes are the 370 volunteers.” He further remarked, “Just because we’re retired doesn’t mean we’re done,” highlighting the ongoing contributions of the squad members.

Acknowledging Community Impact

In addition to recognizing the Sun City Center Emergency Squad, the Board also honored Andrew Emerton, founder of Breathe Florida. Emerton was commended for his nonprofit work aimed at empowering high school students with life-saving skills through free CPR certification programs. These programs are facilitated in partnership with the American Heart Association, further enhancing community resilience.

The recognition of these individuals and organizations underscores the importance of volunteerism and community engagement in safeguarding public health and safety. The commendation ceremony serves as a reminder of the invaluable contributions made by those who dedicate their time and expertise to help others.

The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners continues to support initiatives that foster community involvement and promote safety. By celebrating the achievements of the Sun City Center Emergency Squad and Breathe Florida, they highlight the essential role that volunteers play in creating a safer, healthier community for all.
