Valentine’s Day is approaching, and the Great Bend Public Library (GBPL) offers a variety of engaging activities to celebrate the occasion. As part of their community outreach, the library invites couples and friends to explore unique date ideas that are both affordable and fun, making them ideal for book lovers.
For those seeking a creative outing, GBPL is hosting a range of activities throughout the week leading up to February 14, 2024. Visitors can participate in a game of Chocolate Tic Tac Toe for two, embark on a Valentine’s scavenger hunt, and browse themed book displays showcasing romantic titles and literature about love.
For individuals who prefer a cozy night in, the library provides access to a wide selection of digital titles via platforms such as Libby and hoopla. This allows patrons to enjoy a literary date from the comfort of their homes.
Crafting and Learning Opportunities
On the evening of February 14, the library will host its monthly Adult Craft event, starting at 18:00. Participants can create beautiful macramé moon decorations. Supplies are limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. The east entrance will remain open until 18:15 for those wishing to attend.
In addition to crafting, the library offers a variety of computer classes aimed at enhancing digital skills. The next sessions will take place at the Senior Center on February 19 at 10:00 and during a Brown Bag session at noon on February 21 in the library’s Lower Level Meeting Room. For personalized tech support, visitors can stop by the Reference Desk during the weekly Tech Tuesday program at 11:00.
For avid readers, GBPL will host its February Open Book Club meeting on February 20 at 19:00. Participants are encouraged to read Percival Everett’s novel “James,” a reimagining of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” from Jim’s perspective. The novel has received acclaim for its humor and insightful observations.
Exciting Events for Teens
Teens in grades 6-12 can join the exciting Cupcake Wars competition on February 24. Participants will face a series of challenges to showcase their frosting skills. Interested teens must sign up by the deadline of February 18. Registration is available at greatbendpl.info/teens.
Additionally, the library is launching its Teen Manga & Anime Club, inviting fans to explore Japanese visual culture. The next meeting is scheduled for February 19 from 17:30 to 19:45, where members will discuss “My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!” by Satoru Yamaguchi. The club will also engage in activities related to the series, providing a platform for creativity and discussion.
Haylee Huddleston, the Teen Services Librarian at Great Bend Public Library, encourages community members to participate in these enriching experiences.
