Liens totaling $345,000 have been filed against a new commercial retail strip mall located on Route 1 in Thomaston, Maine. Since October 31, 2025, four separate liens have surfaced regarding the property at 200 New County Road. The development, constructed by Thomaston Retail Management, LLC from Bingham Farms, Michigan, has encountered financial disputes with several contractors involved in the project.
The liens indicate that the construction company responsible for the project, Stork Construction, LLC, operating as Alrig USA Construction out of Detroit, is allegedly behind on payments owed to these contractors. Specifically, Jake Barbour, Inc., and George C. Hall & Sons have filed liens in the Knox County Registry of Deeds, claiming they are owed $238,104 for their work.
Additionally, Oakes and Parkhurst Glass of Augusta filed a lien for $61,794, citing unpaid work. R.A. Cummings, Inc., also known as Auburn Concrete, claims it has not received $28,545 for services rendered at the site. While Twin City Hardware of Oakdale, Minnesota, filed a lien for $16,525 in October, it was discharged in December.
Adam Grant, an attorney representing Alrig, stated that “certain of the lien claimants have payment agreements in place.” He also noted that Hall has received approximately $700,000 for its contributions to the construction project.
The property was purchased by Thomaston Retail Management in December 2022 after obtaining final approval from the Thomaston Planning Board. Construction commenced in September 2024, and the development has already welcomed tenants, including a Jersey Mike’s sandwich shop, which opened late last year. A Starbucks outlet is expected to open soon, and an AT&T store is also part of the retail complex. Details regarding the fourth retail space remain unannounced.
As the situation with the liens unfolds, the impact on the ongoing development and its future tenants remains to be seen. The complexities of construction financing highlight the challenges faced by developers and contractors in the commercial real estate sector.
