Zelensky Details Near-Ready Peace Deal as Russia Launches Drone Attacks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky delivered a poignant New Year’s address, expressing hope for peace while acknowledging the ongoing conflict with Russia, which marked the new year by launching over 200 drones into Ukraine. As Zelensky reflected on the year gone by, he lamented the continued presence of war, stating, “I would give anything in the world if, in this address, I could say that peace will also come in just a few minutes.”

In his speech, Zelensky highlighted that a peace deal, which has received support from the United States, is “90% ready.” He indicated that the remaining challenges stem from Russia’s uncompromising demands and lack of significant concessions. “Those are the 10% that will determine the fate of peace, the fate of Ukraine and Europe, how people will live,” he remarked, emphasizing the critical nature of these unresolved issues. Zelensky underscored the importance of unity and determination from Ukraine, the U.S., Europe, and the global community to finalize the agreement.

Ongoing Conflict and Recent Developments

Zelensky’s speech followed a discussion with Donald Trump‘s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, regarding the peace negotiations and Ukraine’s future security. Witkoff noted on social media that the focus was on advancing discussions in a practical manner, including enhancing security guarantees and establishing mechanisms to prevent further escalations in the conflict.

As Zelensky sought to engage in diplomatic efforts, Russia was active in its military aggression, launching approximately 205 drones into Ukraine on New Year’s Eve. According to Kyiv’s military, this attack resulted in at least two fatalities, while Ukraine’s air defense systems intercepted 176 of the incoming drones. Despite this defensive success, 24 drones successfully struck 15 locations across the nation.

The renewed violence coincided with Russia’s allegations regarding a supposed assassination attempt on President Vladimir Putin, linked to a drone strike in December. Ukraine has categorically denied these claims, and reports from the CIA have suggested that such allegations lack credibility.

Zelensky concluded his address with a call for collective action, stating, “Ten percent to save millions of lives. Ten percent of the determination needed for peace to work 100%.” As Ukraine faces persistent threats from Russia, the international community’s response and cooperation will be pivotal in shaping the path toward a lasting resolution.
