Verizon Launches Affordable 5G Fixed Wireless Access Service
Verizon has introduced a budget-friendly version of its 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) service, targeting consumers with light usage needs in areas not served by its Fios broadband network. Named Verizon Home Internet Lite (VHI), this service aims to provide an alternative to outdated broadband options like DSL and satellite, which have historically limited connectivity for many households.
VHI is specifically designed for customers who do not require extensive internet usage. According to a representative from Verizon, the service operates on C-Band frequencies when the 5G network is unavailable, ensuring users still receive reliable connectivity. The monthly cost is set at $25 when bundled with a mobile plan, or $35 for standalone service, making it a competitive option for those mindful of their budgets.
For performance, VHI promises download speeds capped at 25 Mb/s, with typical speeds ranging between 10 Mb/s and 25 Mb/s. After the initial 15 GB of data usage in a month, speeds will be throttled to a maximum of 10 Mb/s, although unlimited data is available for the remainder of the billing cycle. The service includes a complimentary router for self-installation, enhancing user convenience.
Verizon’s existing 5G Home Internet services range from approximately $35 to $75 per month, varying based on plan specifications and whether the customer has an existing mobile tariff. In the second quarter of 2023, Verizon reported an addition of 278,000 FWA customers, bringing its total to 5.1 million. The company’s CEO, Hans Vestberg, has expressed confidence in reaching a target of between 8 million and 9 million subscribers for the service by 2028.
In a strategic move earlier this month, Verizon announced its acquisition of regional FWA provider Starry for an undisclosed amount. This acquisition is part of Verizon’s plan to expand its FWA offerings, particularly in multi-dwelling unit buildings, where it aims to enhance accessibility for residents.
As the demand for reliable internet access continues to grow, Verizon’s new offering caters to a segment of consumers who have felt underserved by traditional broadband providers. With VHI, the company is not only expanding its service reach but also addressing the needs of budget-conscious users seeking dependable internet solutions.
