President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that South African officials will not receive invitations to the upcoming G20 summit, scheduled for 2026 in Miami, Florida. This decision follows a recent meeting of the G20 in South Africa, which saw minimal participation from U.S. representatives.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “At my direction, South Africa will NOT be receiving an invitation to the 2026 G20, which will be hosted in the Great City of Miami, Florida next year.” He further criticized South Africa, claiming that the country has shown it is “not a country worthy of Membership anywhere.” The G20 comprises 19 nations, along with the European Union and the African Union.
The recent G20 summit in South Africa concluded without any high-level U.S. officials present, a situation attributed to Trump’s unfounded assertions regarding a “white genocide” against Afrikaners, the white minority group that governed during apartheid. These claims have received public attention from tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, a South African native who had previously served as an advisor to Trump.
Back in May, Trump hosted South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House. That meeting turned tense, highlighted by Trump playing a video in the Oval Office that he claimed supported his allegations of genocide against Afrikaners. Ramaphosa and other officials from South Africa have consistently rejected these assertions, with Ramaphosa stating, “That is not government policy,” in response to allegations of land seizures from Afrikaner farmers.
Trump’s administration had previously shown support for white South Africans, issuing an executive order aimed at assisting “Afrikaner refugees escaping government-sponsored race-based discrimination.” In his recent remarks, Trump reiterated his stance on the human rights conditions in South Africa, asserting, “The United States did not attend the G20 in South Africa, because the South African Government refuses to acknowledge or address the horrific Human Right Abuses endured by Afrikaners, and other descendants of Dutch, French, and German settlers.”
The upcoming G20 summit will take place at Trump National Doral, a resort owned by Trump’s family business. This decision has raised eyebrows, given the ongoing discussions surrounding Trump’s previous comments and policies regarding South Africa.
As the situation develops, the implications of Trump’s decision to exclude South Africa from the G20 will continue to unfold, potentially affecting diplomatic relations between the United States and South Africa in the years leading up to the summit.
