Search Efforts Intensify for Two Missing Off Withernsea Coast

A search operation is currently underway for two individuals believed to be missing off the coast of Withernsea in the East Riding of Yorkshire, according to HM Coastguard. Emergency services received an alert shortly after 15:00 on January 1, 2024. Responders faced challenging conditions, with reported wave heights reaching up to 9.8 feet throughout the day.

Humberside Police confirmed the recovery of an unconscious man from the water during initial search efforts. Tragically, despite the prompt response from emergency personnel, the 67-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities noted that the circumstances surrounding his death do not appear to be suspicious.

Search operations continue, and local residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area as search efforts persist.

Challenging Conditions for Rescue Teams

Darrin Stevens, a local photographer who resides just 250 meters from the coastline, described the weather as bitterly cold. “I came back into my office and could see emergency services just 30 feet away from the sea,” he remarked. Stevens observed the helicopter’s close proximity to his home, highlighting the urgency of the rescue efforts.

He cautioned about the dangers posed by the harsh sea conditions, stating, “The water is very bitter, and if they are in that water, they do not have long.” He emphasized the critical need for caution in such conditions, advising that every precaution must be taken.

HM Coastguard has reiterated its commitment to the ongoing search, stressing the risks associated with entering cold water. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has also issued warnings regarding cold water shock, particularly in weather conditions where sea temperatures are around 6°C to 10°C. Gareth Morrison, the RNLI’s head of water safety, advised the public to be cautious and aware of their limits when participating in activities such as festive dips or winter swimming at this time of year.

Recent Tragedy Highlights Dangers of Cold Water

This search effort follows another incident where a 51-year-old man lost his life in the sea at Brighton on New Year’s Day. Sussex Police were alerted at 10:35 on January 1, 2024, after the swimmer was recovered from the water near Brighton Palace Pier.

As the search continues in Yorkshire, local authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and exercise caution when near the water, especially during winter months when conditions can be particularly treacherous. The situation remains fluid, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
