Monmouth’s Rodney Nelson Shines with 244 Yards in 35-7 Win

In a standout performance, Rodney Nelson rushed for a career-high 244 yards and scored three touchdowns, leading Monmouth University to a convincing 35-7 victory over Bryant University on November 4, 2023. The Hawks, now with an impressive record of 8-1 and 5-0 in the Coastal Athletic Association, showcased their dominance with a powerful first half, putting up 21 points.

Despite not forcing any turnovers, Monmouth’s defense effectively contained Bryant to just 226 total yards. The Bulldogs struggled on third down, converting only four of 13 attempts, and managed just one successful conversion out of three on fourth down.

Nelson’s Impact on the Game

Nelson’s remarkable performance included 34 carries, along with two receptions for 62 yards. He broke free for a 69-yard touchdown run on Monmouth’s second drive, marking the longest play of the game. Additionally, just before halftime, Frankie Weaver connected with Nelson on a 49-yard touchdown pass, extending the Hawks’ lead to 14 points as the teams headed into the locker room.

Weaver completed 14 of 19 passes for 218 yards, contributing two touchdowns to the scoreboard but also throwing two interceptions. His efficiency helped maintain momentum for Monmouth throughout the game.

Bryant’s Struggles Continue

For the Bulldogs, who now hold a record of 2-7 and 0-5 in conference play, Zyheem Collick emerged as a bright spot with three receptions for 69 yards. Bryant’s recent form has been disappointing, marking their sixth consecutive loss after a promising start that included a victory over FBS opponent UMass.

Monmouth’s victory not only solidifies their position in the FCS coaches’ poll, where they are currently ranked ninth, but also extends their winning streak to six games. The Hawks will look to maintain their momentum as they continue through the season, aiming for a strong finish in the Coastal Athletic Association.
