The last Ebola patient in Congo has been discharged, raising hopes that the country’s latest outbreak may be nearing its end. The World Health Organization (WHO) announced over the weekend that no new cases have been reported since September 25, 2023. This development marks the beginning of a 42-day countdown, after which the outbreak can be declared over if no further infections are confirmed.

Details of the Outbreak

The outbreak was first declared in the remote Bulape health district of Kasai on September 4, 2023. Over the course of the outbreak, a total of 64 cases were recorded, including 53 confirmed and 11 probable cases. Tragically, the WHO reported that 43 individuals lost their lives due to the virus. Only 19 patients have made a full recovery, including the last patient discharged on Sunday.

Dr. Mohamed Janabi, the WHO regional director for Africa, highlighted the significance of this recovery. He stated, “The recovery of the last patient just six weeks after the outbreak was declared is a remarkable achievement that shows how strong partnership, national expertise and determination have contributed to overcoming challenges to save and protect lives.”

Ongoing Efforts and Challenges

Despite the positive news, the WHO remains vigilant. The organization continues to work closely with the Congolese government to maintain the necessary measures for detecting and responding to any potential new cases. This outbreak marked the first occurrence of Ebola in the Kasai province in 18 years. Health workers faced significant challenges in reaching affected patients due to poor road infrastructure in the area.

The WHO’s ongoing presence and support are crucial as the region strives to prevent a resurgence of the virus. The successful discharge of the last patient serves as a beacon of hope for the local population and highlights the importance of collaboration in public health efforts.

As the 42-day countdown progresses, health officials and local communities are encouraged to remain alert and prepared to respond swiftly should any new cases arise.
