Kim Jong Un Celebrates New Year with Daughter and Troops

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un marked the beginning of 2025 with New Year celebrations in Pyongyang, featuring fireworks, traditional songs, and a taekwondo demonstration, according to state media KCNA. Joining him at the festivities was his daughter, Ju Ae, who is seen by some analysts as a potential successor. Images published by KCNA depicted the pair embracing children and sharing moments of affection throughout the event.

In a speech delivered during the celebrations, Kim commended the North Korean populace for their hard work, which he claimed resulted in “successes and phenomenal changes” over the past year. He called for unity among the citizens as the 9th Congress of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea approaches, expected to convene in early 2026. This congress is anticipated to outline the country’s strategic direction for the next five years, covering areas such as nuclear development, military advancements, and economic planning.

Kim also conveyed a New Year’s message to North Korean troops currently engaged alongside Russian forces in the conflict in Ukraine. He referred to them as the “greatest strength and pride and a strong pillar” of North Korea, expressing his eagerness for their return. “Be brave. Behind you are Pyongyang and Moscow,” he stated, as reported by KCNA.

The state news agency additionally mentioned that Kim received New Year greetings from several global leaders, including the President of China, although specific names were not disclosed. The absence of a direct mention of Xi Jinping sparked curiosity regarding the nature of diplomatic relations between the two nations as North Korea navigates its geopolitical landscape.

As North Korea prepares for significant political events in the coming year, the involvement of Kim’s daughter in these public celebrations may indicate her increasing visibility in the country’s leadership dynamics, as speculation about succession continues to grow.
