India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a man accused of playing a role in the deadly car bombing near Delhi’s iconic Red Fort. The attack, which occurred on March 31, 2024, resulted in the deaths of at least 10 people and injured more than 30 others.
The suspect, a resident of India-administered Kashmir, is linked to the vehicle involved in the bombing, according to the NIA’s social media statement. The agency also identified the alleged suicide bomber, who was a resident of the Pulwama District in Jammu and Kashmir. The individual reportedly died when the vehicle he was driving detonated at a traffic light.
Investigations Underway Following the Attack
Authorities have seized another vehicle associated with the alleged bomber, who worked as an assistant professor at Al Falah University in Faridabad, located in the National Capital Region of Delhi. The university has stated that it has “no connection with the said persons apart from them working in their official capacities with the University,” as reported by CNN affiliate News18.
In their investigation, the NIA has interviewed over 70 witnesses and is actively searching for others who may have been involved in the bombing. The attack took place in a bustling area known for its crowded bazaars and street vendors, transforming the popular tourist hub into a scene of chaos and destruction.
The incident occurred around 18:42 local time when a “slow-moving” vehicle stopped at a red light. Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha described the moment of the explosion, stating, “An explosion occurred in that vehicle. The passengers in the vehicle and people in surrounding vehicles were impacted.”
In the aftermath, at least six vehicles and three autorickshaws were reported damaged or set on fire. Emergency crews quickly responded after receiving a call at 18:55 local time, extinguishing the flames and aiding the injured at a nearby hospital.
