A 70-year-old man from El Cajon, California, is recovering in the hospital following a serious hit-and-run incident that occurred on March 12, 2024. Julio Arreola sustained multiple injuries after being struck while crossing the street near US Bank on Fletcher Parkway and Pioneer Way around 15:30.
Reflecting on his experience from his hospital bed, Arreola stated, “I was lucky not to get killed or paralyzed.” His condition includes fractures to his ribs and spine, as well as a head injury that required staples, according to his sister, Luz Arreola.
The suspect in the case, 19-year-old Brian Guevara, fled the scene but was later apprehended by law enforcement using license plate readers. Guevara has since been booked on charges related to the hit-and-run.
Community Impact and Urgent Plea for Caution
Arreola’s injuries have forced him to temporarily close his television repair shop, creating financial strain as he focuses on recovery. He expressed concern not just for himself but for other pedestrians in the area, urging drivers to exercise greater caution to prevent similar incidents.
This hit-and-run highlights a troubling trend in El Cajon, where several recent incidents have raised alarms. Notably, a 6-year-old boy was killed near City Heights, and another case in El Cajon left a 12-year-old boy hospitalized. These events have intensified calls for improved road safety measures in the community.
As Arreola and his family navigate this challenging time, they are advocating for increased awareness among drivers to help prevent future tragedies. The community’s safety remains a priority, and the hope is that heightened vigilance can make a difference in protecting pedestrians.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident as they address the growing concern over hit-and-run accidents in the region.
