Nearly a decade after a pioneering surgical procedure, Ximena and Scarlett Hernandez Ambriz, former conjoined twins, are making headlines as they compete in a cheerleading event in Corpus Christi, Texas. The twins were born conjoined at the pelvis, and in 2016, doctors at Driscoll Children’s Hospital successfully performed a complex surgery to separate them, offering them the chance to lead independent lives.
Their mother, Silvia Hernandez Ambriz, expressed her gratitude, stating, “Thanks to the doctors, they’re here… walking and dancing.” Initially, medical professionals had reservations about whether the girls would ever be able to walk. Today, not only are they walking, but they are also dancing and thriving in their cheerleading routines, with Silvia coaching them as they prepare for a state competition.
From Hospital to Cheerleading Stage
The cheerleading performance chosen by the twins reflects their family’s journey, with every aspect of the routine symbolizing their resilience. Horine, who is now the CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities South Texas, has been a constant source of encouragement since the twins were infants. “I was blessed to be one of the few people who could visit them in the NICU when they were still conjoined,” she recalled, sharing her experience during their surgery when only a select few were allowed in the waiting room.
The family faced significant challenges during the recovery period. For over a year, they lived at the Ronald McDonald House, where they received support from the community. Silvia reflected, “The moments that marked my life forever… the people here were always there for us. When we cried, they cried with us. We never felt alone.”

Silvia regards the surgery as a transformative experience for her daughters. “It’s like they were born again,” she stated, emphasizing that their story serves as an inspiration for other children facing medical difficulties. “If they want something, they should not give up.”
