Estonian writer-director-producer Rain Rannu premiered his latest film, New Money, at the 29th edition of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival on November 14, 2023. The film, which had its international debut in the Baltic Competition, presents a humorous take on the question many dream of: what would one do with 50 million euros, approximately $58 million?
Returning to their roles from Rannu’s previous film, Free Money, Märt Pius and Steffi Pähn portray the couple Taavi and Liisa. Joining them are actors Ivo Uukkivi, Elina Masing, Edgar Vunš, and Keith Siilats, all part of Rannu and Tõnu Hiielaid’s production company, Tallifornia. The film’s sales are being managed by Baltic Crime.
The plot centers around the couple’s unexpected windfall. In an effort to promote financial literacy among young people, Liisa and Taavi agree to a tabloid interview that triggers a series of chaotic events. Their openness leads to a flood of anonymous insults, indecent proposals, and unwanted offers, alongside the attention of a con artist. As Taavi grapples with his newfound fortune in Bitcoin, he soon regrets the dramatic shift in their lives.
Rannu discussed the organic process of creating New Money, clarifying that while it features the same characters, it is not a direct sequel to Free Money. “When I made the last one, I really liked those two characters,” he explained. “I thought it would be great to spend some more time with them.” After sharing the script with the original actors, their enthusiastic response led to the film’s development.
During the discussion, Rannu highlighted the importance of editing in shaping the final product. He remarked, “In editing, you can make it or break it.” The process allows filmmakers to focus on nuances that can significantly impact storytelling.
The film’s overarching theme, according to Rannu, is succinctly captured in the phrase: “more money, more problems.” The sudden wealth brings a host of challenges for the couple, making their journey both comedic and tumultuous.
Looking ahead, Rannu hinted at the possibility of a third installment set in the universe of Free Money and New Money. “A couple of good ideas are floating around already,” he noted, suggesting that new stories about the characters could further explore their lives.
With its blend of humor and insight into financial dilemmas, New Money is poised to resonate with audiences, prompting reflections on the complexities that accompany wealth. The film’s trailer is available for those interested in its comedic exploration of dreams and nightmares tied to sudden riches.
