Authorities in Costa Rica have released significant information regarding the alleged murder of Kurt Van Dyke, a renowned surfing figure from California. Van Dyke, aged 66, was reportedly held hostage in his home by at least two armed individuals over the weekend, according to the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ).
The incident occurred in the Cahuita area of Talamanca, Limon province, on Saturday, March 9, 2024. The suspects forced Van Dyke and his girlfriend into a room at gunpoint, where they remained for several minutes while valuables were stolen from the residence. “It appears they killed the man and fled. The woman did not sustain serious injuries; however, the man died at the scene,” OIJ officials stated.

Emergency responders arrived at approximately 10:50 a.m. following a report of a man’s death. Upon examination, authorities identified the victim as Van Dyke, a U.S. citizen. Preliminary findings suggest that asphyxiation was the primary cause of death, although he also sustained multiple stab wounds.

His brother, Peter Van Dyke, expressed concerns about the circumstances surrounding his brother’s death. He mentioned that he had recently spoken to Kurt, who was “in good spirits,” but noted that there were individuals in the area who harbored animosity towards him. “There are people who like him and there are people who don’t. It was more nefarious,” he added.
