Austrian singer Al Cook takes on a new role in the feature film *The Loneliest Man in Town*, which had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival on February 19, 2024. Directed by Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel, the film presents a poignant exploration of loss and resilience through the eyes of a character who closely mirrors Cook’s own life.
In this docu-fiction portrait, Cook plays a fictionalized version of himself, navigating a world that feels increasingly alien. Set in Vienna, the film reflects the struggles of an artist deeply connected to his memories, as he faces the possibility of losing his home and, ultimately, his past. The synopsis notes that “his apartment and basement studio are crammed full of books, videotapes, and vinyl records – all that remains of a life once fully lived.”
The narrative unfolds as a ruthless real estate company targets Cook’s residence for demolition. Forced to confront the loss of his cherished belongings and the memories they hold, he grapples with the critical question: “How do you move forward when memories are all you have left?” In the face of this turmoil, Cook chooses a radical new beginning, embodying the spirit of resilience that the filmmakers sought to highlight.
Behind the Scenes of a Unique Film
Produced by Vento Film and with world sales handled by Be For Films, *The Loneliest Man in Town* features a talented cast including Brigitte Meduna, Alfred Blechinger, and Flurina Schneider. Covi and Frimmel not only directed but also oversaw the casting and production of the film. Covi penned the script, while Frimmel handled cinematography, and both collaborated on editing with Emily Artmann.
The filmmakers were drawn to Cook for his dedication to authenticity in his music. “What fascinated us was that this talented blues guitarist performs in very small venues sometimes, and at other times on a much larger scale—always refusing to compromise about his musical vision,” Frimmel stated in press notes.
Covi expressed the challenges they faced in portraying such an independent artist. “We were aware that a film with him would be a great project, but difficult as well, because he is a very independent artist: someone who wants to be in sole charge,” she said. The journey to gain Cook’s trust was lengthy, but ultimately fruitful, as he became invested in the concept of playing a role that resonated with his own experiences.
A Global Release and Impact
The film is set to be released in Austria by Stadtkino, with international distribution deals already being secured. Kmbo has acquired the film for France, Xenix Filmdistribution for Switzerland, A-One Films for the Baltics, and New Cinema for Israel.
