Leaders of the United States Air Force have announced a significant change in the frequency of readiness reviews for airmen, moving from quarterly assessments to annual checks. This decision, confirmed by Acting Vice Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Scott Pleus, will take effect starting in 2026.
In a memo dated Wednesday, Pleus indicated that unit commanders would now have the authority to conduct these annual reviews at their discretion. The reviews will assess an airman’s overall readiness, including mandatory physical fitness evaluations and compliance with military grooming standards. Notably, commanders will decide the uniforms airmen will wear during these evaluations.
This policy shift comes after Pleus initially mandated quarterly reviews in a memo issued on January 30, 2023. Under the earlier directive, at least one quarterly review was required to be conducted in full service dress uniform, while another would involve an operational camouflage pattern uniform. The original memo was circulated prior to Pleus’ appointment as acting vice chief of staff.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has consistently emphasized the importance of adhering to military grooming and fitness standards since assuming his role at the Pentagon earlier this year.
On Thursday, Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force David Wolfe publicly supported the transition to annual reviews. In a social media post, he referenced feedback from airmen expressing concerns about the frequency of the evaluations. “We’ve heard your feedback from the field, and we listened,” Wolfe stated. “This change reflects confidence in our leaders to know their airmen, manage readiness, and address issues on the daily, not just during a scheduled review.”
Wolfe elaborated that annual reviews will allow units to better allocate their time and resources, focusing on the core mission and the well-being of personnel.
This shift in policy marks a significant adjustment in the Air Force’s approach to personnel readiness, aiming to streamline processes while maintaining high standards of performance and appearance among airmen.
