UPDATE: Residents of Northern Liberties in Philadelphia are on high alert as they suspect they are victims of a disturbing TikTok scam. Since September, at least 20 young women have mistakenly arrived at local homes, seeking hair appointments facilitated through a TikTok account named “Nariah the Hairstylist.”
Local resident Jearold Hersey expressed his fears, stating, “Mostly concerned for safety. My family is here. This is freaking my son out.” The alarming situation escalated when these young women, after contacting the TikTok account, were instructed to send a deposit via Cash App before receiving an address. Shockingly, that address led them directly to Hersey’s home.
“It’s kind of nerve-racking because you don’t really know who is coming to the door,” Hersey added, describing the anxiety felt by his family. Neighbors have also taken action, posting warnings on their doors indicating that their addresses have been misused for an online scam.
“Sometimes people see the sign and go away, and sometimes people bang on the door,” Hersey noted, highlighting the emotional toll this situation has taken on the community.
In a troubling turn, when Action News reached out to the number listed on the TikTok page, the individual on the line stated she would provide an address after receiving a $25 deposit, before abruptly hanging up when questioned about the scam.
Hersey is urging others to be vigilant. “I really want them to get caught in all honesty,” he said. “This isn’t cool. It’s not fair to the people, not just the people who are getting ripped off for money; we feel unsafe as well.”
Officials at the Philadelphia Police department are advising anyone who has been affected by this scheme to file a police report. This urgent warning serves as a critical call to action for residents to remain aware and protect themselves against this alarming trend.
