Urgent: Thousands Prepare for Our Lady of Guadalupe Feast Amid ICE Fears

UPDATE: As the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe approaches, tens of thousands of pilgrims are gearing up for the celebration at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine in Des Plaines, despite growing concerns over potential immigration enforcement actions.

The annual event, commemorating the Virgin Mary’s appearance to Saint Juan Diego in 1531, is set to draw large crowds on Thursday and Friday. However, the Trump Administration’s ongoing immigration crackdown has left many frightened about attending.

Rector Rev. Esiquiel Sanchez has urged the community to embrace their faith and join the pilgrimage. “I have been calling on the community to take some courage and come to the pilgrimage,” he stated. “But if they don’t feel safe for any reason, it’s OK.” To alleviate fears, many services will be livestreamed, ensuring that everyone can participate in the festivities safely.

In a proactive move, more than 400 volunteers have been trained to assist attendees and create a welcoming environment. The shrine will prioritize the safety of all visitors, with uniformed police present to maintain peace. “Whenever people see a uniformed officer, they are there to make sure everyone is safe,” Sanchez emphasized.

Pastor Sean Hanson noted that the episcopal diocese will participate in ecumenical services, offering prayers for community members unable to attend due to fear or illness. This gesture is intended to foster unity and support among attendees.

The Department of Homeland Security has reassured the public, stating, “ICE does not raid churches—regardless of if it is the holiday season or not.” This statement aims to provide some comfort amid rising tensions.

The celebrations not only honor the Virgin Mother but also highlight the resilience of the community in the face of adversity. The shrine’s leadership hopes the events will bring people together rather than divide them.

As the countdown to the feast continues, organizers are focused on ensuring a safe and joyous experience for all. Attendees are encouraged to join in the spirit of the event, armed with faith and courage, as they gather for this significant occasion.
