Urgent Return: Guantanamo Bay Evacuees Head Home Post-Hurricane

UPDATE: Evacuees from Guantanamo Bay are returning home today after being sheltered at NAS Pensacola due to the devastating impacts of Hurricane Melissa. The storm caused significant destruction in late October, forcing the Navy to evacuate personnel to ensure their safety.

Hurricane Melissa wreaked havoc, leaving a trail of destruction across the Caribbean. In response, Navy officials initiated an urgent evacuation process, relocating evacuees to NAS Pensacola for immediate safety and support. During their stay, NAS Pensacola provided essential resources, including food, clothing, and emotional support, demonstrating remarkable community solidarity.

Command Master Chief Kenneth Nixon praised the efforts of NAS Pensacola, stating, “From the onset of us receiving the order to execute, we were out the door. The team did an amazing job.” He emphasized the quick response and care provided to evacuees under pressure.

The NAS activated its Emergency Family Assistance Center, partnering with organizations like the American Red Cross and the United Services Organization (USO) to meet the evacuees’ needs. Local community members also contributed, donating meals, pet food, and other supplies to help the evacuees feel at home during the ordeal.

Nixon expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying, “What it’s really truly about is sailors taking care of sailors… We’re forever grateful to NAS Pensacola and the entire team for taking care of us.”

For the past three weeks, personnel at Guantanamo Bay have dedicated themselves to repairing the damages caused by the storm. With conditions improving, the return of evacuees marks a significant step towards normalcy. Captain Chandra Newman, Naval Air Station Commanding Officer, stated, “I couldn’t be prouder of the team and the community we serve. They supported these Guantanamo families for three weeks, and now we can send them home to their loved ones.”

As evacuees return, the focus shifts to ongoing recovery efforts in Guantanamo Bay. The community’s resilience and support have been key during this challenging time.
