BREAKING: A 42-year-old man has been hospitalized following an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to his leg in Beltrami County late Monday night. The incident occurred in Sugar Bush Township at approximately 11:11 p.m. on October 27, 2023, according to a statement from Beltrami County Sheriff Jason Riggs.
Authorities report that the man was a passenger in a vehicle that had stopped on Hales Road, just north of Birchmont Beach Road. He exited the vehicle to unload his firearm when it accidentally discharged, causing the injury. Emergency services were promptly notified by the vehicle’s driver, who then headed toward the Cass Lake Indian Health Service for assistance.
Responding law enforcement and emergency medical teams intercepted the vehicle on Mission Road SE and quickly began providing medical care. The man confirmed the shooting was accidental and was subsequently transported to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center for treatment.
