UPDATE: Flight schedules at Duluth International Airport are in turmoil as a federal shutdown forces significant cuts to airline operations. As of October 6, 2023, one of the four daily Delta flights between Duluth and Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP) has been cancelled, severely disrupting travel plans for many.
According to Natalie Baker, the airport’s director of communications and marketing, a Delta flight scheduled to arrive in Duluth at 3:30 p.m. and depart at 4:10 p.m. was struck from the schedule. The reason for this cancellation remains unclear, but it is part of a broader directive affecting over 40 major airports nationwide that must reduce flight operations by 10% in response to staffing shortages resulting from the ongoing federal shutdown.
This reduction primarily impacts regional travel, leaving smaller airports like Duluth at risk of further interruptions. “We’re not expecting any immediate impact,” Baker stated, emphasizing that the situation is fluid. However, the likelihood of additional cancellations looms as airports work to comply with federal mandates.
Travelers are urged to stay informed about their itineraries. Baker advises anyone with upcoming flights to check with their air carriers to confirm that their travel plans, including connecting flights, remain intact. Many airlines, including Delta, are currently allowing passengers to rebook their flights without incurring financial penalties during this disruptive period.
“I wish we had more information,” Baker added. “All of this is subject to change right now. So, we’re keeping our finger on the pulse.”
Duluth International Airport currently operates four daily flights to and from MSP via Delta and four flights to and from Chicago on United Airlines. The ripple effects of this federal shutdown are being felt across the nation, and travelers are advised to remain vigilant as conditions may continue to evolve.
As the situation develops, the focus will remain on how regional carriers adapt to the federal guidelines. Further updates are expected as airlines assess their schedules and capacity. Stay tuned for the latest news as this critical situation unfolds.
