UPDATE: A tragic discovery has been made near the Michigan State University (MSU) campus. Authorities have identified the body recovered from the Red Cedar River as 32-year-old Meagan Turner, a Canadian doctoral student. Her body was found last Monday, just east of Cedar Village, according to reports from CBS News Detroit.

The East Lansing Police Department confirms that there is currently no evidence of foul play in Turner’s death. As investigators await toxicology reports, which could take two to four weeks, they are examining all possible circumstances surrounding her passing. While drugs or alcohol have not been ruled out, Police Chief Jen Brown stated, “We do not have reason at this point to believe there is an ongoing risk to public safety.”

The community is shaken by this incident, recalling the similar case of Brendan Santo, an 18-year-old MSU student found dead in the same river in October 2021. Santo died from accidental drowning, with a blood-alcohol level of 0.22 and no other substances detected. The unsettling similarities have raised concerns among students and residents alike.

As the investigation unfolds, the East Lansing Police urge anyone with information to come forward. The department assures the public that they are committed to exploring all leads in this case.

The emotional impact on Turner’s family and the MSU community is profound, as they seek answers during this difficult time. This developing story highlights the urgent need for awareness regarding the safety of students, especially around local waterways.

Stay tuned for updates as more information becomes available. The East Lansing community and authorities continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of all residents.
