UPDATE: A stunning 17-foot balsam fir from Turck’s Trees in Litchfield, Minnesota, has just arrived at the State Capitol, set to become this year’s official Capitol Christmas tree. Delivered earlier this week, the tree will be decorated on Monday and will stand as a festive centerpiece for the public in St. Paul throughout the holiday season.
Turck’s Trees was chosen for this prestigious honor after winning grand champion at the 2025 Minnesota State Fair. This is a historic moment for the farm, marking their first time providing the Capitol tree, as stated in a recent news release.
The balsam fir, known for its rich green needles and delightful fragrance, is native to eastern and central Canada as well as the northeastern United States. According to Turck’s Trees, it is celebrated as the most aromatic of all Christmas tree varieties, making it a perfect fit for the Capitol’s festive decor.
The tree was officially set up in the rotunda on Tuesday, where Capitol staff prepared it for the upcoming celebrations. Turck’s Trees, a family-owned farm since 1875, has been growing and selling Christmas trees since 1981. The operation spans approximately 100 acres, with multiple generations of the Turck family actively involved in the business.
The farm’s owners, Joan and Steve Turck, expressed their pride in this significant recognition, noting the tree’s selection from over 120 competing entries from members of the Minnesota Christmas Tree Association.
In 2024, Turck’s Trees also won reserve grand champion at the Minnesota State Fair and provided trees for the Governor’s Residence in St. Paul, further establishing their reputation in the community.
As the holiday season approaches, this tree stands as a symbol of Minnesota’s rich traditions and community spirit. As it brightens the Capitol, it invites everyone to gather and celebrate the joy of the season.
Expect to see the tree adorned and ready for public viewing starting next week—stay tuned for updates on the decoration ceremony and holiday festivities!
