TSMC Arizona Launches Mass Production of NVIDIA AI Chips

URGENT UPDATE: TSMC has officially begun mass production of NVIDIA’s cutting-edge AI chips at its facility in north Phoenix, Arizona. This significant milestone was celebrated on October 12, 2023, during an event attended by NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang and TSMC executives.
The first batch of NVIDIA’s Blackwell AI chips has already been delivered, despite the TSMC factory still being under construction, with only a third of the site completed. Huang emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “The single most important chip is being manufactured here in the United States by the most advanced fab at TSMC here in the United States.”
David Keller, CEO of TSMC North America, shared the ambitious production plans, saying, “You’ll see thousands and thousands of Blackwell’s coming out of this factory very soon.” Huang further highlighted the demand, adding, “He spoke in thousands. We ordered in millions.” This rapid production ramp-up is crucial for meeting the growing demand for AI technology.
In addition to the current production, TSMC is already looking to expand its operations. The company has partnered with a developer to construct a large section of land across Loop 303, which it refers to as an “innovation corridor.” During the earnings call on the same day, TSMC CEO C.C. Wei announced plans to introduce the advanced 2-nanometer production process to Arizona sooner than initially anticipated. This cutting-edge process is currently unavailable even in Taiwan.
Huang stressed the importance of TSMC’s growing presence in Arizona for strengthening the United States’ AI supply chain, stating, “To support the AI infrastructure buildout we’re going to do, we’re going to need all of the fabs being built here in Arizona, but also a broad range of supply chains.” This development underscores the ongoing investment in AI technology within the United States, which could significantly impact the global tech landscape.
As TSMC ramps up production, the impact on the local economy and job market is expected to be substantial. With thousands of chips being produced, the facility is set to create numerous high-tech jobs in the region, reinforcing Arizona’s position as a hub for technological innovation.
Stay tuned for more updates as TSMC and NVIDIA continue to lead the charge in AI chip production, shaping the future of technology right here in Arizona.
