UPDATE: Texas officials are ramping up efforts to combat drunk driving as the holiday season approaches, a time notorious for rising alcohol-related crashes. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has just announced the launch of its statewide campaign, “Drive Sober. No Regrets,” urging Texans to prioritize safety by planning for sober rides during festivities.
The campaign is set to run from December 12, 2023, through January 1, 2024, coinciding with intensified DWI enforcement across the state. Recent data reveals a staggering 2,000 drunken-driving crashes during the 2024 holiday season, leading to 96 deaths and 201 serious injuries. Authorities stress that these incidents are preventable and can have devastating long-term consequences.
The Garland Police Department is among several North Texas law enforcement agencies that are enhancing DWI patrols using both marked and unmarked vehicles during nighttime hours. Officials warn that a first-time DWI conviction can incur fines of up to $17,000, along with legal fees and skyrocketing insurance rates. Additional costs, including bail and court-ordered programs, can elevate the total financial impact to over $17,000.
TxDOT, in collaboration with local police agencies, is promoting several safety recommendations. The Dallas County DWI taskforce is also rolling out English and Spanish-language digital ads featuring QR codes that offer discounts of $20 or more for rideshare services like Lyft, further encouraging responsible celebrations and safe transport home.
As families and friends gather for the holidays, officials are urging everyone to take the pledge to drive sober. With increased patrols and heightened awareness, authorities aim to significantly reduce the toll of impaired driving this season.
Stay tuned for more updates as the campaign progresses and remember: your choices can save lives. Plan ahead, stay informed, and ensure that everyone gets home safely.
