Sylvan Furniture to Close in Lewiston, New Store Set to Open

URGENT UPDATE: Sylvan Furniture, a cherished retailer in downtown Lewiston, is set to close its doors by the end of April 2024. The iconic store, located at 815 Main St., has been a staple in the community since the 1950s, but a new family-owned furniture store will take over the location following renovations slated for late summer or early fall.

Rachel Rinard, who co-owns Sylvan Furniture with her husband, JJ Rinard, confirmed the closing and announced the transition plan during a press briefing earlier today. The decision to close was not made lightly; Rinard stated, “We were approached by an interested party that wanted our building. It definitely was not something we were looking for.”

The store’s “Store Closing Forever” sign highlights the urgency of the situation, as the Rinards prepare for a going-out-of-business sale that has already begun. Sylvan Furniture’s employees will be retained by the new store, ensuring continuity of service for loyal customers.

New inventory continues to arrive, including popular items such as power sofas and recliners equipped with USB ports for charging devices. “We’re about ready to get in a container of furniture that has individual seating surround sound,” Rinard noted, referring to a unique item called “sound emulsion.”

The store will accept special orders for another six to eight weeks, accounting for approximately 80% of sales volume. Customers will still be able to access their orders, as the Rinards plan to maintain an office at the Sylvan warehouse for about one year post-closure. “We have a lot of people building homes right now,” added Rinard, emphasizing the ongoing demand for their furniture.

Sylvan Furniture’s history spans over two decades under the Rinards’ ownership, following their acquisition from Karen Shaul, a second-generation owner. Rinard reflected on her time at the store, expressing, “I loved Sylvan Furniture. It’s a great environment, great employer, great customers. I was never bored.”

As the store winds down its operations, attention turns to the future. The new furniture retailer, while still undisclosed, is set to bring renewed vitality to the downtown area after renovation efforts. Local residents and customers are encouraged to take advantage of the ongoing sale while they can.

Stay tuned for further updates as this developing story unfolds in Lewiston. The community’s connection to Sylvan Furniture runs deep, and the impact of this transition will be felt by many.
