String Band Competition Halted Amid Dangerous Winds in Philadelphia

UPDATE: The Philadelphia String Band Association has just announced the suspension of the annual Mummers Parade String Band competition due to dangerous wind conditions. With sustained winds reaching 30 mph and reports of wind damage during set-up, officials are prioritizing performer safety.

Despite the suspension of the judged competition, String Bands will still march in full costume and make-up along Broad Street and City Hall. They will perform for live audiences as well as TV and online viewers, although they will do so without props. The procession will maintain its original schedule and order, allowing spectators to enjoy the vibrant spectacle.

Organizers emphasize that the decision was made with the utmost concern for the safety of the performers. “The safety of our artists is our top priority,” stated an official from the association.

The Philadelphia String Band Association confirmed that further details regarding a potential rescheduled competition will be released once arrangements are finalized.

As the parade continues, the community is encouraged to support the performers and enjoy the unique experience of the Mummers Parade, even in these challenging weather conditions.
