Snowstorm Hits Rhode Island with 2 Inches Expected Today

URGENT UPDATE: A fast-moving snowstorm is poised to cover Rhode Island with up to 2 inches of snow this afternoon into tonight, February 10, 2023, according to the National Weather Service. This weather event is significant, especially following an unrelenting cold spell that has settled over the region.

The northern two-thirds of Rhode Island is expected to receive between 1 to 2 inches of snow, while the southern parts will likely experience a mix of rain and less than an inch of snow. Although the storm is not forecasted to be a major snow-maker, parts of neighboring Massachusetts could see between 3 to 4 inches of snow, intensifying the winter conditions across the Northeast.

As of now, Rhode Island is still grappling with the aftermath of severe winter weather. The Providence area has accumulated over 20 inches of snow in January alone, with an additional 2.6 inches recorded so far in February. There remains approximately 10 inches of snow on the ground due to consistent cold weather, which has hindered any thawing.

February has proven particularly brutal, with an average temperature of 19.9 degrees, marking it 10.5 degrees colder than normal for the first nine days. January’s average was also below normal at 27.4 degrees. The extreme cold is expected to ease this week, with a forecasted high of 34 degrees for Tuesday in Providence, and temperatures climbing to between 35 and 36 degrees through Saturday.

Forecasters are also keeping a close eye on another potential coastal storm this weekend, which could further impact travel and weather conditions in the area. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest forecasts and prepare for changing conditions as the winter weather continues to unfold.
