SCRANTON, Pa. — Urgent celebrations erupted today as Sister Marionette Coll, a beloved IHM nun, marked her extraordinary 104th birthday surrounded by friends at Our Lady of Peace Residence. With a beaming smile, Sister Marionette expressed her joy, stating, “Well, it feels good. You get a lot of attention.”

Born on November 17, 1921, in Pittsburgh, Sister Marionette is a shining example of resilience and faith, having dedicated her life to serving God and the community since joining the convent at just 17. Reflecting on her journey, she recalls her arrival vividly: “I came on the night train from Pittsburgh, by myself. The sisters got me a special card for clergy. And I wasn’t clergy,” she shared, emphasizing her commitment to her calling.

Over her remarkable nine decades of service, Sister Marionette has witnessed profound historical changes, living through the terms of 18 U.S. Presidents and witnessing events as significant as the fall of the Soviet Union. Her unique perspective is enriched by her roots in a large Irish Catholic family, where she was one of twelve children.

Among her fondest memories is her work with children, sharing a touching anecdote from her past. “This one kid said to me one day, ‘You never get sick, do you?’ And I said, ‘No, so don’t plan on it. Because he wanted me to miss the damn school. I never missed a day of school,’” she recalled with a chuckle, highlighting her dedication to education and community.

Sister Marionette’s secret to longevity? Daily games of Scrabble and meaningful conversations with those around her. “I take that, you take it one day at a time, and you try to make that a good day,” she advised, a mantra that resonates with many.
