Sholan Farms Donates 3,200 Pounds of Apples to Thanksgiving Baskets

UPDATE: Sholan Farms in Leominster has taken urgent action to support the local community by donating 3,200 pounds of surplus apples to those in need. On November 12, 2025, over two dozen dedicated volunteers packed 80 bushels of apples into more than 900 bags, ensuring that families have fresh produce for their Thanksgiving meals.

The collaborative effort was spearheaded by Joanne DiNardo, President of Friends of Sholan Farms, who expressed gratitude for the abundance of apples this season. “Sholan Farms has been truly blessed with apples, volunteers, and a great staff,” DiNardo stated. This year marked a significant turnaround after a tough 2024 season, where the farm faced challenges and had to purchase apples.

The apples will be distributed to various local entities, including Our Lady of the Lake, St. Anna, and Ginny’s Helping Hand, among others. Brandon Robbins, Executive Director of Ginny’s Helping Hand, emphasized the importance of these donations, saying, “Sholan Farms’ donation brings something truly special to our Holiday Food Baskets of Hope.” With rising food insecurity, the need for assistance in the community has never been greater.

In addition to the apple donation, Ginny’s Helping Hand has also received 5,440 pounds of nonperishable food from a local school drive. Robbins noted a “significant increase” in requests for food baskets this year, highlighting the pressing issue of food insecurity exacerbated by rising grocery costs.

The volunteer effort at Sholan Farms showcased community spirit, with individuals coming together in frigid temperatures to make this initiative possible. DiNardo praised the team for their hard work, stating, “What an amazing team effort!” The volunteers worked diligently from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., showcasing the power of community support.

With the holiday season approaching, initiatives like this serve as critical lifelines for families facing food insecurity. The partnership between Sholan Farms and local organizations underscores the importance of community engagement during challenging times.

This urgent update reminds us that local farms can play a pivotal role in supporting their communities, transforming surplus resources into nourishment for those in need. As the holiday season unfolds, the impact of such initiatives will resonate throughout the community, fostering hope and connection.

For anyone wishing to contribute or get involved, now is the time to support local farms and organizations dedicated to aiding those less fortunate. The efforts of Sholan Farms and its volunteers exemplify the true meaning of community.
