Second Driver Dies in Willow Glen Crash; DUI Suspected

URGENT UPDATE: A second driver has tragically died following a head-on collision in Willow Glen, San Jose, raising concerns over potential DUI involvement. The crash, which initially claimed the life of a 74-year-old woman, occurred at approximately 2:35 PM on Saturday.

According to San Jose police, the incident unfolded when a man driving a white 2018 GMC Yukon attempted to overtake a green 2018 Subaru Forester on Foxworthy Avenue. Instead of passing safely, he collided with the Subaru, propelling the GMC into oncoming traffic where it struck a blue 2012 Honda CR-V head-on.

The Honda’s driver, identified as Ellen Jo Orcutt, died at the scene. Orcutt was a dedicated community advocate known for her work with the unhoused in Santa Clara County, as highlighted by a GoFundMe set up by her daughter. In a heartfelt message, her daughter expressed the immense loss, stating, “She was a lifelong, humble servant… dedicated to families in need.”

The GMC driver, Christian Herbert Hygelund, an 81-year-old resident of Los Gatos, was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday. Authorities confirmed that an investigation indicates Hygelund was under the influence of alcohol during the incident.

This devastating event marks the 31st and 32nd traffic fatalities in San Jose this year, a stark increase compared to 44 deaths recorded at this time in 2024. Police are urging anyone with information about the crash to contact Detective Tori DelliCarpini at 408-277-4654 or via email at [email protected].

The community mourns the loss of Orcutt, whose legacy will live on through the charities and organizations she supported. Her daughter has pledged that contributions from the GoFundMe will be donated to causes close to her mother’s heart once family expenses are covered.

As investigations continue, the implications of this tragedy resonate deeply within the community, highlighting the urgent need for awareness around the dangers of impaired driving.
