Santa Cruz Chili Cook-Off Returns with Record 55 Teams on Oct. 25

UPDATE: The highly anticipated annual Chili Cook-Off at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is set to return on October 25, 2023, featuring a record-breaking 55 teams competing for cash, plaques, and bragging rights. This exciting event promises to be a feast for chili lovers, with both meaty and vegetarian options available for sampling.

The cook-off kicks off at 10 a.m. when tasting kits go on sale for just $15, each including eight sample cups and a People’s Choice ballot. The public tasting will begin at 1 p.m., giving attendees a chance to savor the culinary creations and cast their votes. As a community-focused event, a portion of all proceeds will benefit Haven of Hope, a nonprofit that has supported current and former foster youth since 1998.

This year’s cook-off will award honors in various categories, including Best Amateur Red, Best Professional Vegetarian Red, and the coveted People’s Choice award. Defending champions include Ric’s Righteous from San Jose, which took home titles in both the Professional Vegetarian and Professional Meat categories, and Smokin Hot Chili from Campbell, the reigning winner in the Amateur Meat division.
