UPDATE: Sacramento is making significant strides in addressing homelessness, managing a staggering 2,096 cases in just one week. The latest data from the City’s Incident Management Team (IMT) highlights the urgency of the situation as officials work tirelessly to provide solutions to vulnerable residents.
Between November 10-16, 2023, the city received 544 calls to its 311 customer service, leading to the opening of 2,096 cases. Importantly, this number surpasses the call volume, as many calls can generate multiple cases. Over the same period, 2,466 cases were successfully closed, showing progress in resolving issues and achieving compliance.
The Department of Community Response has stepped up its outreach efforts, enrolling 74 individuals into systems that connect them to local shelters and essential resources. Additionally, 17 people were placed in housing at the City’s Roseville Road campus or the Outreach and Engagement Center (OEC). However, the city faces a critical challenge with limited capacity: there are currently zero Pallet homes and zero trailers available at the Roseville Road campus, with only two spaces open at the OEC and an average of 13 openings at City-funded shelters.
The impact of homelessness on Sacramento’s landscape is undeniable. The IMT has conducted extensive waste removal operations, successfully disposing of an astounding 50,140 pounds of trash, significantly improving the environment for residents and those experiencing homelessness alike.
Sacramento’s commitment to transparency is evidenced through a publicly accessible data dashboard, allowing residents to track the IMT’s progress since September 2023. This tool provides cumulative figures for outreach efforts, compliance, and cleanup activities, further demonstrating the city’s proactive approach to managing this pressing crisis.
As Sacramento continues to navigate the complexities of homelessness, community members are encouraged to stay informed and engaged. The IMT’s ongoing efforts are vital to making a lasting difference in the lives of those affected.
