Sacramento Man Convicted of Attempted Murder in Family Attack

UPDATE: A Sacramento man, Hamdi Bazyan, has been convicted of attempted murder and animal cruelty following a horrific attack on his parents and their family cat. The jury delivered the verdict on Thursday, concluding a case that has left the community in shock.

The violent incident occurred on December 26, 2021, when Bazyan’s erratic behavior prompted his family to contact law enforcement. After police left, he armed himself with three large knives, imprisoning his parents in their bedroom and launching a brutal assault on them. The District Attorney’s Office reports that Bazyan faced multiple charges, including two counts of attempted murder, one count of animal cruelty, and several counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

During the attack, Bazyan stabbed the family cat nine times and attempted to asphyxiate her. His mother was stabbed in the torso, while his father sustained multiple stab wounds while trying to protect her. As the violent rampage unfolded, the mother managed to escape to a neighbor’s house to call for help, highlighting the desperate situation.

Authorities confirmed that both parents survived the ordeal, thanks to life-saving aid administered shortly after the attack. The family cat also survived, making a miraculous recovery from the traumatic event.

Deputy District Attorney Alexandra James, part of the Elder Abuse Unit, stated that the jury’s decision reflects the severity of Bazyan’s actions. The charges included allegations of causing great bodily injury and personal use of a knife, underscoring the violent nature of the assault.

Following the attack, Bazyan fled upon hearing police sirens but was apprehended near the American River bridge. He now faces a significant prison sentence, with sentencing scheduled for a later date.

The disturbing details of this case have sparked outrage and concern within the community, emphasizing the urgent need for awareness around domestic violence and animal cruelty. As the case progresses, further updates will shed light on the sentencing and any potential implications for mental health resources in the area.

This conviction highlights the serious consequences of domestic violence and serves as a reminder of the critical importance of timely intervention in such situations. Authorities urge anyone experiencing similar threats to seek help immediately.
