Runners Gear Up for 62-Mile Murphy’s Challenge on March 14

URGENT UPDATE: A growing number of runners are set to tackle a remarkable 62-mile challenge between all five Murphy’s grocery stores in Humboldt County on March 14. This unique footrace, called the Murphy’s 100k, is not just a test of endurance but also a vital fundraising effort for local businesses and residents affected by the devastating fire on January 2.

Organized by ultrarunner Pete Ciotti, the event is expected to draw significant participation, with around 15 runners already signed up since the announcement just yesterday. Runners will begin at the Trinidad Murphy’s, journeying down Scenic Drive to Clam Beach, and then onto the Hammond Coast Trail before heading to the Arcata Westwood Murphy’s. The route continues through Glendale, back to Arcata, down the Bay Trail to Cutten, and concludes at Sunny Brae.

The event encourages donations to assist fire victims through the Arcata Chamber of Commerce, with no registration fee required. Participants can also contribute by rounding up their purchases at Murphy’s in the week leading up to the race, with proceeds going to support those in need.

Ciotti, who was inspired by previous cycling events, emphasized the community aspect of the run. “It’s a great way to get everyone moving and see all the cool spots around the area,” he stated. “In these dark times, it’s good to have people like that who are doing positive things.”

Aid stations will be set up at each store to support the runners throughout the challenging course. Ciotti encourages anyone interested to join, highlighting the health benefits and camaraderie that running fosters.
