Redondo Union Boys Basketball Triumphs Over Democracy Prep 87-61

UPDATE: The Redondo Union boys basketball team delivered a commanding performance, defeating Democracy Prep from Las Vegas 87-61 in a thrilling match at the Harvard-Westlake Winter Showcase. This victory marks Redondo’s third straight win this season, improving their record to 3-0.

The Sea Hawks, determined to overcome last season’s near-miss in the CIF State finals, showcased their grit and determination on the court. Just last year, they fell short by a mere seven points in the regional semifinals, an experience that has fueled their drive this season.

In a fast-paced game, the first ten minutes were tightly contested before Redondo Union unleashed a fierce 21-6 run following a crucial timeout. Leading the charge was SJ Madison, who scored 23 points while contributing six rebounds, four steals, and two blocks. Madison expressed the team’s commitment to aggressive play, stating, “Our coaches are always telling us that we have to play aggressively on defense, and we started to pick it up in the second quarter.”

Teammate Devin Wright added 17 points, four rebounds, and three assists, while Chris Sanders chipped in with 14 points and six rebounds. Madison dominated early in the second half, scoring eight of the first twelve points, extending the Sea Hawks’ lead to 31 points with just over four minutes left in the third quarter.

Despite Democracy Prep narrowing the gap to 19 late in the game, Redondo quickly responded, with Madison driving to the basket for a layup and Wright scoring eight consecutive points within the final minute of the third quarter, restoring a comfortable 29-point lead.

Wright emphasized the team’s mindset heading into each game, saying, “We all have worked so hard in the offseason learning a lot from last year, and we don’t want to let that happen again.” The Sea Hawks are focusing on a challenging nonleague schedule to prepare for the upcoming Bay League and CIF-SS playoffs.

However, Coach Reggie Morris acknowledged there is still room for improvement. “We didn’t get off to a good start in the first half. I told my guys they have to start playing with more urgency and get more aggressive on defense,” Morris said. He highlighted Madison’s leadership and urged Wright to maintain that aggressive approach moving forward.

As the Sea Hawks continue their promising season, fans and analysts will be watching closely to see if they can sustain this momentum and make a deeper playoff run. Stay tuned for more updates as Redondo Union aims to solidify its status as a contender.
