UPDATE: Project Fire Buddies has just been awarded a prestigious gala event at the new Hollywood Casino Joliet, valued at $60,000. This exciting development was confirmed earlier today, marking a significant boost for the nonprofit that brings joy to children battling life-threatening illnesses.
Kurt DeGroot, a firefighter/paramedic from Oak Forest, initiated Project Fire Buddies over a decade ago, aiming to provide special gifts and support to critically ill children. Since its inception, the organization has expanded to over 170 chapters across 15 states, including several communities in Illinois such as Calumet Park and Tinley Park. DeGroot’s vision began when he and fellow firefighters noticed how their presence brightened the spirits of children facing serious health challenges.
The gala at Hollywood Casino Joliet is set to take place in fall 2024 and will accommodate 400 guests. The event will feature an array of food options, non-alcoholic beverages, wine service, and comprehensive event staffing, alongside 40 hours of volunteer support from the casino staff. Ruben Warren, the casino’s vice president and general manager, remarked, “Project Fire Buddies stood out for its long-standing commitment to the region and positive impact on the families it serves.”
DeGroot expressed his gratitude, stating, “For them to select us was an absolute honor. It shows they care about the most vulnerable in their community.” The gala is expected to raise additional funds for the nonprofit, allowing it to continue its vital work supporting sick children and their families.
In addition to this gala, Project Fire Buddies is also hosting its own annual event on February 7, 2024, at the Tinley Park Convention Center, with an anticipated attendance of 1,500. This event will provide an opportunity for families affected by illness to come together and enjoy a night out, showcasing the organization’s dedication to uplifting spirits during challenging times.
Mike Lough, a territory manager for Project Fire Buddies, highlighted the importance of the upcoming gala, stating, “The event will strengthen our connection to the surrounding community and will allow more of our funds raised to go directly to our efforts, ultimately bringing joy to even more children.”
DeGroot’s commitment to helping these children has been a family affair. His wife and children actively participate in planning and delivering gifts, often sacrificing their own holiday presents to ensure more children receive support. “This would have failed were it not for my family,” DeGroot noted.
As Project Fire Buddies prepares for these significant events, the community is encouraged to rally behind this cause, ensuring that joy reaches even the most vulnerable children.
