UPDATE: In a dramatic finish to the 4A State Tennis Championships, Peak to Peak’s star players, Vivaan Bhardwaj and Shreyas Sundaresan, both fell short in their quest for the title at Pueblo City Park on Saturday. Their losses mark the end of a stellar season for the team, which had high hopes after a strong performance throughout the year.

Bhardwaj, a senior, faced off against Nithesh Karuppasamy from D’Evelyn, ultimately losing in a crushing match that saw him drop 12 consecutive games. Reflecting on the experience, he stated, “I think mentally, my strength is probably experience in high-pressure situations… Those really taught me how to stay mentally stoic.” His impressive speed and forehand were clear advantages, but Karuppasamy’s unique style proved too difficult to counter.

Sundaresan, competing fiercely against Oliver Neely from Colorado Academy, lost both sets with a close score of 7-5, 7-5. Earlier in the week, Neely had also bested Sundaresan with a score of 6-1, 5-7, (11-9). Sundaresan noted, “My strategy was to attack his backhand… but then he shifted his focus to running around it for forehands.” His journey through the tournament has been a learning experience, as he prepares for future competitions.

The Pumas displayed resilience throughout the tournament, with all but one line qualifying. Freshman Cody Palmer achieved a commendable fourth place finish in the singles category. Head coach Matt Palmer emphasized the positive outlook for next year, stating, “Cody will be in the third place match… Shreyas will be back next year.” With a strong lineup of returning players, the team is positioned to build on this season’s achievements.

As for the broader results in the state tournament, the local tennis scene showcased strong performances from multiple schools, with Fairview and Monarch also highlighting notable player achievements.

This year’s 4A State Tennis Championships has not only showcased top talent but also set the stage for exciting rivalries and growth within the sport. The lessons learned by these young athletes will undoubtedly forge a path for future successes.

Stay tuned for more updates and developments as the tennis season continues to unfold. The spirit of competition remains high as these talented players aim to return even stronger next year.
