Officer Placed on Leave After Fatal In-Custody Incident in Oakland

URGENT UPDATE: An Oakland police officer has been placed on paid administrative leave following a fatal incident involving a suspect who suffered a medical emergency while in custody. The incident occurred just after 4:15 a.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2023, in the 11000 block of Ettrick Street.
According to the Oakland Police Department (OPD), officers responded to a report related to a home break-in. Upon arrival, they located the individual inside the residence. A brief struggle ensued while attempting to detain the suspect, who subsequently became unresponsive.
Medics quickly arrived on the scene and transported the suspect to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The OPD confirmed that the involved officers have been placed on leave in accordance with departmental policy.
This incident is now under investigation by multiple authorities, including the OPD Homicide Unit, the Internal Affairs Bureau, the Oakland City Police Commission, the Community Police Review Agency, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
