NYC Demolition Firm to Pay $1.4M for Worker Rights Violations

UPDATE: A New York City demolition company, Alba Services, is set to pay $1.4 million to 700 workers following a restitution agreement with the New York Attorney General’s Office. This decision comes after years of allegations that the company systematically denied workers their rightful compensation.
BREAKING: The New York Attorney General, Letitia James, announced that investigators uncovered troubling practices at Alba Services between 2016 and 2024. Reports indicate the company actively discouraged employees from filing claims with the Workers Compensation Board, retaliating against those who attempted to assert their rights with threats and harassment.
The AG’s office revealed that Alba Services admitted to reporting fewer than half of the injuries it was legally required to, artificially lowering claims and reducing its insurance costs. “For nearly a decade, Alba silenced injured workers, manipulated insurance costs, and allowed a culture of harassment to fester on its worksites,” Attorney General James stated.
In a shocking revelation, it was reported that the company even resorted to posting fliers of employees who sought to file claims, threatening criminal prosecution and offering cash rewards for information on these individuals. Furthermore, owner Andrew Horan allegedly sent texts to foremen, illegally naming employees who filed claims and soliciting information about them in exchange for money.
The AG’s office also highlighted that Alba Services interfered with employees’ medical care. Representatives were sent to accompany workers to medical appointments, misrepresenting the circumstances of their injuries and directing them to specific clinics in order to conceal workplace accidents. In some cases, workers were directed to urgent care centers for injuries that required immediate emergency room treatment.
The ramifications extend beyond just compensation fraud. Investigators confirmed that Alba Services violated fundamental human rights by failing to address sexual harassment claims and retaliating against employees who reported misconduct.
This announcement is a critical development in the fight for workers’ rights, emphasizing the need for accountability in industries where exploitation can thrive. As the situation continues to unfold, employees and advocates alike are closely monitoring the next steps for both Alba Services and the affected workers.
The urgency of this case highlights the ongoing struggles faced by workers in hazardous environments, making it imperative for companies to uphold their responsibilities towards employee safety and well-being.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as officials continue to address systemic issues within the industry and advocate for the rights of all workers.
