New Lenox Library Launches Urgent Care Cabinet Amid Community Need

URGENT UPDATE: The New Lenox Public Library has just launched a vital care cabinet to provide essential resources to those in need, opening its doors on December 4, 2023. This initiative addresses the pressing needs of community members who may hesitate to seek help directly, offering crucial items like Narcan, first-aid supplies, and personal care products at no cost.

Executive Director Michelle Krooswyk emphasized the library’s role beyond literature, stating, “We want the community to be able to rely on the library in times of need.” The cabinet is stocked with items such as deodorant, toothpaste, gloves, and socks, all available without questions asked. This initiative comes following cuts to federal programs impacting low-income residents, highlighting the library’s commitment to supporting its community during challenging times.

The care cabinet was funded by a generous $1,000 grant from the Friends of The New Lenox Library. Originally scheduled for a January 2026 launch, the decision to expedite the opening was made after Melissa Seaberg, the administrative library coordinator, recognized the urgent need for support. “Sometimes asking for help can be a sensitive topic,” Seaberg noted, reflecting on the importance of providing assistance in a dignified manner.

The cabinet has already made a significant impact, with many essential items quickly depleting, illustrating the community’s need. The library has partnered with the Heroin Epidemic Relief Organization to distribute Narcan, a life-saving medication that reverses opioid overdoses. Krooswyk encourages community members to attend Narcan training sessions, reinforcing the library’s role in addressing public health concerns.

Community response has been overwhelmingly positive, with residents contributing supplies to the cabinet. However, library staff are now regulating donations to maintain hygiene standards and ensure items are packaged properly. “We want to make sure the items are hygienic,” Krooswyk explained.

The care cabinet will remain accessible during library hours, and community members can support its efforts through monetary donations via the library’s website or by contributing to an Amazon wish list. The initiative was inspired by similar successful programs at other libraries, showcasing the collaborative spirit within the library community.

Looking ahead, the New Lenox Library plans to celebrate its 25th anniversary next year and is set to open a new café space in January 2024. Additionally, a winter reading program is on the horizon, further enhancing the library’s offerings.

As the New Lenox Public Library steps up to meet pressing community needs, it reinforces its position as a vital resource for all residents. “We just like to find and share ways to support the community,” Krooswyk concluded, emphasizing the library’s ongoing commitment to being a welcoming and supportive space for everyone.
