Mikaela Shiffrin Wins 6th Straight World Cup Slalom in Semmering

UPDATE: Mikaela Shiffrin has just clinched her sixth consecutive World Cup slalom title in Semmering, Austria, on December 28, 2025. The ski star rallied from a challenging first run to secure her victory, overcoming tough conditions that left many competitors behind.

Shiffrin moved up three positions in her second run, finishing just 0.09 seconds ahead of Switzerland’s Camille Rast, who led after the first run. “It was a really hard day today, tough conditions, a really big fight,” Shiffrin stated in her NBC interview after the race. Her determination was evident, as she achieved her best possible run despite facing her largest deficit in a slalom win since 2013.

The challenging course conditions were described by Shiffrin as “past the limit” of safety, with 39 athletes failing to finish, including teammates Liv and Kjersti Moritz. The slippery and inconsistent snow forced adjustments to the course after consultations between athletes and officials. “We were basically arguing or communicating with many coaches and FIS about how to readjust this,” Shiffrin explained, emphasizing the importance of safety on the slopes.

Rounding out the podium, 19-year-old Lara Colturi finished third, marking her fourth podium in five races this season. She expressed her satisfaction with her performance, noting the improvements she has made: “It’s amazing to finish the year with a podium.”

Shiffrin’s latest victory extends her lead in the slalom cup standings to 220 points over Colturi, with three races remaining before the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics. She also maintains a commanding lead in the overall crystal globe standings, ahead by 195 points over Rast.

The victory not only demonstrates Shiffrin’s skill but also reinforces her status as the all-time winningest skier in the history of the sport. Her performance this season matches her best start since the 2018-2019 campaign, drawing her closer to Janica Kostelić’s record of ten consecutive World Cup slalom victories.

Next, the women’s World Cup circuit heads to Slovenia for a giant slalom and slalom event in Kranjska Gora next weekend. Fans worldwide are eagerly anticipating whether Shiffrin can continue her remarkable streak in the coming races.

As the skiing community watches closely, Shiffrin’s resilience and adaptability in adverse conditions solidify her legacy in alpine skiing. With the Olympic Games on the horizon, every race counts as she positions herself for potential glory on the world stage.
