Micron’s Fab Construction Delayed by Years, New Timeline Revealed

UPDATE: Micron Technology’s construction of semiconductor fabrication plants in Clay has been delayed by several years, according to a newly released timeline in the project’s Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) issued on Friday. While initial preparations will begin with tree clearing this year, the construction of four fabs will experience significant setbacks to accommodate utility requirements.

Construction on Fab 1 is now slated to commence in the second quarter of 2028, with operations potentially starting as late as the third quarter of 2030. This marks a two-year delay from previous projections. Fab 2 is expected to follow two years later, beginning in the last quarter of 2030 and not opening until the last quarter of 2033, a staggeringly three years beyond initial expectations.

The timeline for Fab 3 has also shifted, with construction now expected to begin in the third quarter of 2035, a two-year delay, while Fab 4 is pushed back by one quarter, with completion projected for 2041. The entire construction process is anticipated to extend over approximately 16 years, subject to necessary permits and approvals.

The revised schedule will also impact the initiation of supporting facilities. Construction for the childcare center will now begin in 2028, rather than the previously planned 2026, and the health care and recreation centers will see their timelines pushed from 2030 to 2032. Additionally, securing warehouse space has been delayed to November 2028, as wafer production is set to start later than initially planned.

Despite these delays, the final report maintains that the Micron Campus will still be completed by 2041 and is projected to create more than 9,000 permanent onsite operational jobs by 2045.

The implications of these delays are significant, not only for Micron and its workforce but also for the local economy in Clay. As the construction timelines shift, the community will have to adapt to the prolonged wait for job opportunities and associated economic benefits.

What’s next? Stakeholders will be closely monitoring the progress of the construction and the procurement of necessary permits as Micron navigates this revised timeline. With the semiconductor industry facing unprecedented demand, these developments underscore a critical moment for both the company and the region.

As the situation evolves, stay tuned for updates on Micron’s construction timeline and its impact on the local job market.
